The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, on Thursday commended the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) for the donation of critical equipment to boost the operational capabilities and safety of men and officers of The Nigeria Police.
Speaking at the formal handover of a customised patrol and reserve thermal imaging drone, 100 units of M88 bulletproof fibreglass helmets, 100 units of JVD bulletproof vests, and 100 units of Motorola walkie-talkies at the State Command Headquarters in Ovom, Yenagoa, the police boss said what the Board has provided represented the most important equipment, short of weapons, required for effective policing operations.
“I am overwhelmed that NCDMB has come up with such a surprise,” he declared, stating that he was so happy that the gesture was coming to the State Police Command during his era, and that the development would be duly communicated to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
He said the fibreglass helmets and bulletproof vests, which cannot be penetrated by bullets, would protect men and officers during their operations, while the drone, which he described as a powerful one, would facilitate detection of crime scenes and hideouts of criminals, among other functions. The walkie-talkies, he explained, would enhance communication among operational units at different locations.
He noted that “if police men are protected, they will live to fight another day.” In his words, “You can see today, Bayelsa State is very calm. It is because of technology. Our cameras are all over and we are monitoring activities.”
He assured his guests that the State Command would not fail the Board and the people of Bayelsa State and the nation, while handing a copy of the Police Directory to the NCDMB team, pointing out that the State Command was “24/7 online.”
Earlier, in a brief address while handing over the equipment, the Acting Director, Project Certification and Authorization Division (PCAD) of the Board, Engr. Austin Uzoka, who represented the Executive Secretary, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, said the donation was part of the partnership the NCDMB has had with The Nigeria Police in Bayelsa State, and that the Board was highly impressed
with the performance of the State Command in crime prevention and maintenance of peace.
He pointed out that “community policing is everybody’s business” and that the Board was pleased to partner the police in their operations to achieve the objective of enhanced security across the State.
In his own remarks, the Manager, Security Services, at the NCDMB, Mr. Desmond Awumade, said the NCDMB and the State Command are “synergising to work for Bayelsa and the country at large.” According to him, the items donated would not just help in building synergy but also support the Command in maintaining its effectiveness and efficiency.
On the NCDMB team were the General Manager, Corporate Communications Division (CCD), Dr. Obinna Ezeobi; Manager, Institutional Strengthening, Engr. Dokubo Obongo, and Deputy Manager, Government Relations, Mr. Teddy Bai, among others.
