The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board flagged off its pilot Geosciences training at the Laser Petroleum Geosciences Centre in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Monday 16th, September, 2013.

Speaking at the event, the General Manager, Capacity Building Division, NCDMB, Engr. Omorode Oviasu explained that this was the first industry capacity building initiative directly organized by the Board, adding that Geosciences was chosen because of the gap the industry experienced in the area.

He stated further that the goal of the programme is to make Nigerians employable by equipping them with the requisite skills, describing the programme as a passport to the career growth of the 46 trainees.

According to him, the Board was working to secure internship placements for the trainees with relevant service companies since on the job experience was critical to achieving completeness of the training.
The placements however, would not be automatic but predicated on the performance of the trainees, he added.

Fielding questions on the modalities of the training programme, Coordinator, Laser Petroleum Geosciences Centre, Professor Mike Onyekonwu informed that adequate arrangements had been made to provide the trainees with tools they would need for the duration of the course.
He thereafter admonished them to focus on the programme, stressing that the training was worth over a million Naira per participant and would imbue them with skills required by the industry, but often not taught in Nigerian universities.
